PROFESSOR

“Teaching is the act of opening up the imagination.”

My passion is embodied learning. Through twenty five years of teaching at the university level, I’ve learned that students engage with material best when their bodies are active participants in the learning process. I have found this to be particularly true in teaching religious studies and women’s studies. My years as a theatre director, playwright, and teacher enable me to see this. When the arts become part of the education journey, students learn on both cognitive and experiential levels. I am currently lecturing at San Jose State University, in Comparative Religious Studies and Women’s Studies.

In all of my courses, I utilize theatre as an embodied technique for learning. Using the whole body in tandem with critical thinking, learning becomes an encounter with self and other.
